AmeriCorps

AmeriCorps VISTA is a national service program designed specifically to fight poverty. Founded as Volunteers in Service to America in 1965 and incorporated into the AmeriCorps network of programs in 1993, VISTA has been on the front lines in teh fight against poverty in America for more than 40years. VISTA members commit to serve full-time for a year at a nonprofit organization or local government agency, working to fight illiteracy, improve health services, create businesses, strengthen community groups, and much more. With passion, commitment and hard work they create or expand programs designed to bring individuals and communities out of poverty. Habitat for Humanity International partners with the Corporation for National nad Community Service to manage its AmeriCorps VISTA program. This partnership provides HFH affiliates with assitance in their mission to eliminate substandard housing.

2011-2012 AmeriCorps VISTA Member

Loudoun Habitat's 2011-2012 AmeriCorps VISTA member is John Evans, who joined us at our Leesburg office on August 22, 2011. John grew up in the Rochester, NY area and graduated recently from SUNY Binghamton University in Binghamton, NY with a BA in History. John has had prior experience rehabilitating homes in the Appalachian region and framing new homes with Habitat in New Orleans. He became interested in AmeriCorps VISTA as a means of service to the community after speaking with AmeriCorps members during his prior work with Habitat. He is excited to be working with Loudoun Habitat to eliminate poverty housing in Loudoun County.
